Handley Terms of Service
Last updated: 30 October 2026
These Terms are a binding agreement between you and MONT TECHNOLOGIES (Pty) Ltd, trading as Handley ("Handley", "we", "us"), and govern your use of the Handley app and related services (the "Service"). By creating an account or using the Service you agree to them.
Please read the clauses in bold carefully. Under the Consumer Protection Act we must draw your attention to terms that limit our liability, place risk on you, or require you to indemnify us. They are in section 6 (cancellation fees), section 11 (safety and insurance), section 12 (limitation of liability) and section 13 (indemnity).

These Terms, our Privacy Policy and your booking receipts can be viewed, saved and printed from the app at any time (Account → Terms & Privacy; receipts from each booking). Payments are processed by Paystack using industry-standard security; see the Privacy Policy for how we protect your information.
2. The Service
Handley is a marketplace. It connects people who want home services (Clients) with independent, identity-verified service providers (Providers). Handley does not employ Providers and does not itself perform the services. The agreement to perform a service is between the Client and the Provider; Handley facilitates finding, booking, paying, communicating, rating and resolving disputes.
You may not use Handley for any service that is illegal, dangerous or outside the categories in the app. Providers may only offer services in their listed categories and must hold any licence or certificate the law requires for the work (for example electrical or gas work).
3. Accounts and eligibility
- You must be at least 18 years old.
- Your information must be accurate and kept up to date. Accounts are personal and may not be transferred.
- Providers must pass identity verification before accepting jobs, and may be asked to prove qualifications for regulated work.
- Keep your password and device secure; tell us at once if you think someone else has used your account.
4. Prices and payment
- The price you see when you confirm is the price you pay. It is calculated from a base fee, the time the job needs and travel, and is shown in full before you book. Handley does not change prices during a job.
- The total includes Handley's service fee of 15%; the Provider receives 85% of the total. Tips are optional and go 100% to the Provider.
- When you are charged: your saved card is charged when a Provider accepts your booking — not before. For recurring bookings, see section 5. When you add a card, Paystack charges R1 to verify it and refunds it.
- All amounts are in South African Rand (ZAR). Handley is not currently registered for VAT; if that changes, displayed prices will include VAT.
- If no Provider accepts: an unaccepted "as soon as possible" booking is cancelled automatically after 30 minutes, and an unaccepted scheduled booking 2 hours after its start time. You are not charged.
4A. Welcome offer, referrals and promotions
Welcome offer. New clients get R100 off one booking of R400 or more, and 10% off every other booking made in the app within one month (30 days) of their first booking using the offer. The discount is applied automatically at checkout and shown before you confirm.
- Who qualifies: clients with no previous paid or completed booking who have verified a South African mobile number. One welcome offer per person and per mobile number.
- Dates: claim it (sign up and verify your number) by 31 January 2027. No welcome discount applies to any booking made after 30 April 2027.
- Limits: one discount per booking, so the welcome offer can't be combined with a promo code or Handley credit. It does not apply to automatically scheduled recurring visits (they get the recurring discount in section 5). It has no cash value and can't be transferred.
- Cancellations: if the booking that used the R100 is cancelled, you can use the R100 on your next booking within the month. Cancellation fees (section 6) are based on the amount you actually pay.
- Providers are paid in full: the welcome discount comes out of Handley's fee. On a welcome-offer booking the Provider earns 85% of the full price.
Referrals. A friend's referral code or link tells us who invited you; it doesn't add a further discount. When someone you invited has booked, Handley may add an extra month of 10% off to your account, up to 3 extra months per person and never past 30 April 2027.
Promo codes. Handley may issue other promo codes, each with the conditions stated when it is issued. They are funded from Handley's fee first.
Changes and misuse. We may end or change these offers for new claims with at least 14 days' notice; offers already active run to their end date. We may withdraw an offer from accounts that misuse it (for example several accounts for one person) and reverse discounts obtained that way.
5. Recurring bookings
By turning on a recurring schedule you authorise Handley to charge your saved card automatically for each occurrence.
- Each occurrence is charged about 48 hours before it starts; you are notified when it is charged. If the charge fails, we tell you so you can update your card.
- Discounts depend on how many days a week you book: 5% for 1 day, 10% for 2, 15% for 3–4 and 28% for 5 or more. The current rate is shown before you confirm. The Provider earns 85% of the discounted total in exchange for regular work.
- There is no minimum term. You may cancel or pause the schedule at any time in the app or at support@handley.co.za (CPA section 17). Cancelling at least 48 hours before an occurrence means that occurrence is not charged; an occurrence that has already been charged follows section 6.
6. Cancellations and refunds
You may cancel any booking. The fee depends on how far the booking has progressed, and the exact amount is always shown before you confirm the cancellation.
| When you cancel | Fee |
|---|---|
| Before your card is charged (no Provider has accepted yet) | Free |
| Within 5 minutes of booking, while the Provider is not yet on the way | Free — full refund |
| A charged recurring occurrence, more than 60 minutes before it starts | Free — full refund |
| A charged recurring occurrence, within 60 minutes of the start | R50 |
| Provider has accepted but is not yet on the way | 30 minutes of the booking's hourly rate, capped at 25% of the total |
| Provider is on the way | 1 hour of the booking's hourly rate, capped at 50% of the total (paid to the Provider for travel and time) |
| Provider has arrived, job not started | 50% of the total (paid to the Provider) |
| Job in progress | 100% of the total |
Older bookings without an hourly rate use flat fees: R50 once accepted and R100 once the Provider is on the way. A fee is never more than the amount you paid; the rest is refunded.
- No fee in cases of death or hospitalisation: if you cannot keep a booking because of the death or hospitalisation of the person for whom the booking was made, you will not be charged a cancellation fee (CPA section 17(5)). Tell support@handley.co.za.
- ECTA cooling-off: if your booking was made online and the service has not begun, you may cancel within 7 days of booking under ECTA section 44 by telling us in writing at support@handley.co.za, and we will refund what you paid. Once a Provider has started travelling to you, the fees above reflect the Provider's real time and travel costs; we will discuss any statutory claim with you in good faith.
- If the Provider cancels or does not arrive, you pay nothing. Where you have already been charged, we first try to find you another Provider at the same price; if we cannot, you are refunded in full.
- Refunds are sent to your card issuer within one business day; how quickly they appear depends on your bank (usually a few business days). If you have not received a refund within 10 business days, contact support@handley.co.za.
Providers: you may cancel an accepted job without a fee before you arrive, unless it is due to start within 60 minutes (R50). Cancelling after you have marked yourself arrived costs R50, and cancelling a job you have started costs R100. Fees are deducted from your Handley balance, or from future earnings if the balance is too low. Repeated cancellations can affect your rating and lead to suspension.
7. Complaints and disputes
- If you are unhappy with a service, tell us through the app or at support@handley.co.za, ideally within 48 hours of completion while the details are fresh, with a description and any photos or messages. We aim to resolve it within 3–5 business days of receiving the information.
- Under the CPA you are entitled to services of the quality you can reasonably expect. If a service is not, we will help arrange for the Provider to fix it or refund the part of the price that is reasonable. These Terms do not limit any rights you have under the CPA.
- If we cannot resolve a complaint, you may refer it to the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud (cgso.org.za) or the National Consumer Commission (thencc.org.za).
8. Distance limits
- Providers choose how far they will travel (from 5 km). The platform's absolute limit is 50 km in South Africa (30 km in Bermuda), measured in a straight line from the Provider's location when they accept to the booking address; acceptances beyond it are blocked.
- That location check uses a fresh location reading from the Provider's phone and is used only for the check.
- Please give an accurate booking address; far-away bookings may have fewer available Providers.
9. Acceptable use and keeping bookings on Handley
You agree not to break the law using the Service; harass, threaten or discriminate against anyone; misrepresent who you are; share your account; or scrape, reverse-engineer or interfere with the Service.
Keep it on Handley. You may not arrange or pay for services found through Handley outside the app. Off-platform arrangements lose Handley's payment protection, dispute help and safety features. Accounts that take or solicit off-platform payment may be suspended or removed.
10. Ratings, reviews and identity-linked reputation
- Clients and Providers rate each other after every completed job. We may remove reviews that are abusive, discriminatory or off-topic.
- Your verified identity is linked to your reputation. We keep a one-way (hashed) reference to the identity document used to verify your account, so an account removed for fraud, safety incidents, abuse or a consistently poor reputation cannot simply be re-created. Such a removal may be permanent, and new sign-ups using the same identity may be refused. Suspensions are reviewed by a person and you may make representations to support@handley.co.za (see the Privacy Policy, section 9).
11. Safety and insurance
- Use the in-app Safety tools (SOS, live location sharing, emergency contacts) if anything concerns you. In an emergency call 10111 (SAPS) or 112 from a mobile phone first — the app's tools help, but they are not an emergency service.
- Handley verifies Providers' identity, but cannot guarantee any person's conduct, skill or character.
- Handley does not insure Clients, Providers or third parties. Clients should check that their household insurance covers people working in their home; Providers are responsible for their own business and liability cover.
12. Limitation of liability
To the extent the law allows:
- Handley's total liability to you for any claim about the Service is limited to the amount you paid for the booking concerned (or, for a claim not linked to a booking, the service fees you paid Handley in the previous 12 months).
- Handley is not liable for indirect or consequential loss, such as loss of profit.
- Handley is not responsible for a Provider's acts or omissions, because Providers are independent contractors — but we will help you resolve problems through section 7.
This section does not limit liability for death or personal injury caused by Handley's negligence, for Handley's gross negligence, fraud or intentional wrongdoing, or any liability that cannot lawfully be limited, including under the CPA.
13. Indemnity
You agree to compensate Handley for loss it suffers because you broke these Terms or the law, or used the Service unlawfully or harmfully — except to the extent the loss was caused by Handley's own fault.
14. Providers are independent
Providers are independent contractors, not Handley employees. They choose when they are available and which jobs to accept, supply their own tools and products, and are responsible for their own tax. Handley does not provide employment benefits or workers' compensation cover.
15. Ending your account
- You can delete your account at any time in the app (Account → Delete account). Some records are kept as the Privacy Policy describes.
- We may suspend or close an account that breaks these Terms or poses a safety or fraud risk; where reasonable we will tell you why first and give you a chance to respond.
- Sections 6, 7, 12, 13 and 17 continue to apply after your account ends.
16. Changes
For changes that materially affect your rights we give at least 14 days' notice in the app or by email before they take effect. If you do not accept a change, you may close your account before it takes effect.
17. Governing law
These Terms are governed by South African law. Disputes may be brought in any South African court with jurisdiction, or referred to the bodies in section 7. Nothing in these Terms removes rights you have under consumer-protection law where you live.
